Calculation of retaining walls with geotextiles
Thanks to their versatile design options, gabions are increasingly being used by architects and planners as a cheaper alternative to prefabricated elements and solid walls made of concrete or stones. The area of application covers landscaping and road construction, noise barriers, protective structures and drainage channels. The FIDES-Gabion programme provides the structural engineer with a tool that graphically and interactively performs the necessary verifications required by the standards and Eurocodes for the calculation of retaining structures made of gabions or solid blocks. The calculation covers verifications for tilting and sliding in the footings, for inlaid geotextiles, for external stability as well as tilting, sliding and ground failure in the bed joint.
The earth pressure calculation according to Culmann allows even complex soil layers and concentrated loads to be correctly recorded. A multi-body fracture method (KEM, Kinematic Element Method) is used for external stability.
